Socket - Socket (English spelling)

It means "hole, socket", but generally refers to the socket for light bulbs in electrical wiring devices. Screw-in type (mainly right-hand thread) is the norm, but plug-in types are also available. Made of porcelain or synthetic resin, they are classified according to the type of bulb used, such as large, regular, medium, thin, and small. Shape specifications are stipulated by JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards).

Sockets for corded hanging lights come in two types: key sockets with a flashing key, and keyless sockets without a flashing key. There are also wired sockets, which have a wire directly connected to the keyless socket in advance instead of connecting via a cord. When wired sockets are to be used in humid locations, there are wired waterproof sockets. Sockets used in general electrical facilities are designated as specific electrical appliances under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act, and their manufacture and sale are subject to regulations.

「穴、受け口」の意味であるが、一般には電気配線器具で電球類の受け口をいう。ねじ込み型（主として右ねじ）が普通であるが、差込み型のものもある。磁器または合成樹脂製で、使用する電球の種類によって大型、並型、中型、細型、小型などの別がある。形状仕様についてはJIS(ジス)（日本工業規格）に定められている。

　コード吊(つ)り下げ灯用のソケットには、点滅キーを備えたキーソケットと、点滅キーをつけないキーレスソケットがある。また、コードで接続するかわりに、キーレスソケットにあらかじめ電線を直結している線付きソケットもある。線付きソケットを湿気のある場所に用いるときには、線付き防水ソケットがある。一般電気工作物に使用されるソケットは電気用品安全法により特定電気用品に指定され、製造販売についての規制がある。
