Cranberry - cranberry

An evergreen wisteria plant of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). Its vines can reach several meters and creep along the ground. The leaves are oblong with rounded tips, 1.2 cm long and 0.6 cm wide. In early summer, the flowers grow singly on pedicels emerging from the axils of short, upward-facing stubbles. The pedicel has two bracts, and the short, hairy corolla is deeply incised and everted when in full bloom. The fruit is a round, slightly elongated berry, 1.0-1.5 cm in diameter, and deep pink to red in color. It is processed into sugar stews, jelly sauces, pies, and juice. Native to the marshes of northern America, it grows well in peat bogs with high acidity. Excellent cultivars include Bergman and Wilcox. The number of chromosomes is 2 n = 24, but there are closely related species with 2 n = 48 and 72.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の常緑藤本(とうほん)。つるは数メートルにも及び地をはう。葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形、先は丸く、長さ1.2センチメートル、幅0.6センチメートル。初夏のころ、花は短い上向きの短枝の葉腋(ようえき)から出る花柄上に単生する。花柄は2枚の包葉をもち、短毛がある花冠は深く切れ込み、満開時に反転する。果実は液果で丸くやや長め、直径1.0～1.5センチメートル、濃桃色から赤色を呈する。砂糖煮、ゼリー状ソース、パイ、果汁などに加工する。アメリカ北部の湿地帯原産で、酸度の高い泥炭地でよく育つ。品種ではバーグマンやウィルコックスなどが優れている。染色体数は2n＝24であるが、近縁種に2n＝48、72のものがある。
