815-883 A Sunni Muslim jurist and the founder of the Zahir sect. Born in Kufa, he studied Shafi'i law, and later lived in Baghdad, where he taught his own school of law, and died there. He claimed that the sources of law should be limited to the Quran, hadith, and ijma (agreements) of the sahaba (companions), and that they should be faithfully followed in their literal sense (zahir). Ibn al-Nadim, who wrote the Book of Catalogs at the end of the 10th century, recorded many of Dawood al-Zahiri's works, but none of them remain.
