The hills lie along the southern edge of the Himalayas, from the Indus River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east, and are 8-50 km wide, 900-3000 m high, and 1600 km long. Geologically, they are considered to be part of the Sub-Himalayan belt. The term Siwalik was originally a place name in northern India, but has come to refer to the entire region. This region was formed from the middle Miocene to the early Pleistocene. The strata of the Siwalik Group, which make up the main part of the hills, are divided into three parts, from oldest to newest: Lower (Kamlial, Chinji), Middle (Nagri, Dok Patan), and Upper (Tatrot, Pinjore, Boulder Conglomerate).
