Storehouse Magistrate - Club Magistrate

Japanese:
Storehouse Magistrate - Club Magistrate

One of the positions in the Edo Shogunate. A subordinate of the Finance Magistrate, he was the chief in charge of the collection and disbursement of rice tax for the Shogunate's territory. During the Keicho period, Ina Tadatsugu and Okubo Nagayasu individually had rice storehouses within the outer walls of Edo Castle, but it seems that the storehouse magistrate was established later. The storehouse magistrate was first seen in 1610 (Keicho 15), with the names of Matsukaze Sukeemon and Kurebayashi Yaemon. In the early Edo period, there was a clear distinction between storehouse rice and castle rice, and storehouse magistrates and castle rice magistrates were established. Asakusa Okura was established in 1620 (Genwa 6), and half of the storehouse magistrates in its jurisdiction were oban duty officers. The jurisdiction of the Magistrate of the Asakusa Gokura was limited to eastern Japan, and Magistrates for the Kamigata Gokura were located in Osaka, Nijo, Kyoto, and Takatsuki, Settsu Province.
