This is one of the gradients proposed by J.S. Huxley (1938), which means a continuous change in a trait. It is a phenomenon in which intraspecific or interspecific variation in an organism varies slightly depending on the geographical location, and when a certain trait is measured, it shows a continuous change in a certain direction. There are many known examples of continuous changes from north to south in the Japanese archipelago, such as the leaf size of beech and Japanese vine, the degree of photoperiod response seen in many plants, and the frequency of genes involved in the markings of the ladybird beetle. J.S.
