Born January 7, 1800 in Rock Township, New York.
[Died] March 8, 1874. Buffalo, New York. American politician. 13th President (in office 1850-53). Born in New York State. Self-educated, he became a lawyer in 1823, served as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1828, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1833 to 1835 and 1837 to 1843, and vice president in 1848. He became president in 1850 after the death of President Z. Taylor. He emphasized the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law, which was included in the Compromise of 1850, which led to the dissolution of the Whig Party. He also sought harmony and unity between the East and the West, but he also turned his attention to expanding American influence in the Pacific region, and dispatched M. Perry's fleet to Japan. He retired from politics in 1856.
