It is found in plains and low mountain areas throughout Japan, and is the most common species of hornet. It nests in a wide range of places, including tree branches, rock walls, tree holes, and underground, and its nests are almost spherical, reaching a diameter of 40-90 cm. It has a strong ability to adapt to its environment, and invades newly developed residential areas developed on hilly land, nesting in the attics and under the eaves of houses, but it is very aggressive, and there are many cases of stings.

Japanese:

昆虫綱膜翅(まくし)目スズメバチ科に属する昆虫の一種。体長18～25ミリメートルで、体色は黄橙(おうとう)色。日本全土の平地および低山地に分布し、スズメバチ類中ではもっとも普通種。樹枝、岩壁、樹洞、土中などに幅広く営巣し、巣はほぼ球形で、直径40～90センチメートルに達する。環境適応力が強く、丘陵地を開発した新興住宅地に侵入し、人家の屋根裏や軒下に営巣するが、攻撃性が強いので刺傷事件が多発している。
