...He imprisoned the monster in the Labyrinth, a labyrinth built by the master craftsman Daedalus, and fed it to 14 boys and girls sent from Athens each year as punishment for the murder of his son Androgeos. The monster was eventually defeated by the Athenian prince Theseus, and Daedalus escaped from Crete by air using artificial wings. He followed Daedalus to Sicily, where he was killed by the local king, Kōkalos. These are mainly Attic traditions, but there are also other traditions that say that he organized the oldest navy, defeated pirates, and ruled the entire Aegean Sea, while at the same time giving laws to Crete and governing it well, and that after his death he became a judge of the underworld, together with his brother Rhadamanthys, who was also a famous lawgiver, and Aiakos, a hero known for his piety. Both of these are thought to be faint memories of the heyday of the prehistoric Cretan civilization, also called the Minoan civilization after him. The name Minos may have been a dynastic name or a royal title. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Rhadamanthys" is listed below. Source | Heibonsha World Encyclopedia 2nd Edition | Information |
