Bernard Haitink

Dutch conductor. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and became the principal conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957. He first came to Japan with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1962. He became the orchestra's artistic director and principal conductor in 1964. He also served as the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979. He is a modest but always stable conductor, and has recorded the complete symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, Shostakovich, and others.

オランダの指揮者。アムステルダム音楽院で学び，1957年オランダ放送フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者となる。62年アムステルダム･コンセルトヘボウ管弦楽団とともに初めて来日。64年同管弦楽団の芸術監督兼首席指揮者に就任。67年から79年までロンドン･フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者も務めた。地味だが常に安定した指揮ぶりを示し，ベートーベン，シューベルト，ブラームス，マーラー，ブルックナー，ショスタコービチらの交響曲全集のレコードを作製している。
