1929‐ Dutch conductor. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and became the principal conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957. He first came to Japan with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1962. He became the orchestra's artistic director and principal conductor in 1964. He also served as the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979. He is a modest but always stable conductor, and has recorded the complete symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, Shostakovich, and others.
