Juran Hisao

Novelist and playwright. His real name was Abe Masao. He was born in Hakodate, Hokkaido. After graduating from Takinogawa Seigakuin Junior High School in Tokyo, he worked for the Hakodate Mainichi Shimbun. He became passionate about theater, and moved to Tokyo to study under Kishida Kunio, publishing "Dominoes as a Game of Karuta" (1929). In 1929 (Showa 4), he traveled to France to study at the École Supérieure Physiques de Paris and the École Nationale des Arts Appliqués de Paris, before returning to Japan in 1958. In the 1930s, he wrote humorous novels, mystery stories, and historical stories, and won the Naoki Prize for "Mondo" (Suzuki Mondo), published in 1951 (Showa 26). "Portrait of a Mother and Child" (published in 1954) was selected for first place in an international short story competition.

小説家、劇作家。本名阿部正雄。北海道函館(はこだて)市生まれ。東京の滝野川聖学院中学を卒業後、函館毎日新聞社に勤める。演劇に熱中し、上京して岸田国士(くにお)に師事し、『骨牌(カルタ)遊びのドミノ』（1929）を発表。1929年（昭和4）渡仏してパリ高等物理学校、国立パリ技芸学校に学び、33年帰国。昭和10年代にはユーモア小説、推理もの、歴史ものを書き、51年（昭和26）発表の『鈴木主水(もんど)』で直木賞を受賞した。54年（昭和29）発表の『母子像』は国際短編小説コンクールで1等に入選した。
