Novelist and playwright. His real name was Abe Masao. He was born in Hakodate, Hokkaido. After graduating from Takinogawa Seigakuin Junior High School in Tokyo, he worked for the Hakodate Mainichi Shimbun. He became passionate about theater, and moved to Tokyo to study under Kishida Kunio, publishing "Dominoes as a Game of Karuta" (1929). In 1929 (Showa 4), he traveled to France to study at the École Supérieure Physiques de Paris and the École Nationale des Arts Appliqués de Paris, before returning to Japan in 1958. In the 1930s, he wrote humorous novels, mystery stories, and historical stories, and won the Naoki Prize for "Mondo" (Suzuki Mondo), published in 1951 (Showa 26). "Portrait of a Mother and Child" (published in 1954) was selected for first place in an international short story competition.
