Cat Mountain Ruins - Nekoyamaiseki

Japanese:
Cat Mountain Ruins - Nekoyamaiseki
A cemetery from the early Yayoi period located in Oyanai, Nekoyama, Kyogase Village, Kitakanbara County, Niigata Prefecture. The site is located on a 6m-high natural levee formed by a tributary on the right bank of the Agano River. In 1958, a group of pottery vessels was discovered standing upright during land reclamation work. They were thought to be coffins buried in pits and were determined to be reburial graves. The coffins included a long-bodied jar 50-60cm high covered with a plate or shallow bowl, and two deep bowls with a jointed opening. No bones or other remains were found inside the pottery, but pieces of chert and hard shale, as well as rounded pebbles and stone fragments, were found. It is believed that the former were grave goods and the latter two covered the jar coffins.
