Maurois - André Maurois

Japanese: モーロア - もーろあ(英語表記)André Maurois
Maurois - André Maurois

French author, biographer, and critic. His real name was Emile Herzog. He was the son of a textile factory owner in Elbeuf, Normandy. While studying at the Corneille School in Rouen, he listened to the lectures of the philosopher Alain, who influenced him throughout his life. He graduated with honors, but joined the family business and served as a liaison officer with the British Army during World War I. He made his literary debut with Les Silences du Colonel Bramble (1918), a novel based on his experiences. He gained recognition as a psychological novelist with works such as Dr. O'Grady's Speech (1922), Climats (1928), and The Circle of the Blood (1932). He also published works such as Shelley (1923) and Byron (1930), which were called "fictionalized biographies," and received favorable reviews. After World War II, he wrote many biographies, including George Sand (1952), Hugo (1954), Dumas (1957), and Balzac (1965), all of which were backed up by rich sources and depicted the subtle inner lives of human beings. He also wrote general histories, such as A History of England (1937) and A History of France (1947), as well as an autobiography and numerous essays. In 1938, he was elected a member of the Academie.
