A sword sales za in Kyoto during the Middle Ages. During the Warring States period, sword making was known from the center of Mino's Barrier to the east, Shimada in Suruga, Obama in Wakasa, Nomi in Kaga, Utsu in Etchu, and Momokawa in Echigo, and from the west, Mizuta and Aoe in Bitchu, Mihara in Bingo, Iri-nishi in Aki, Oishi and Miike in Chikugo, Kikuchi in Higo, Namihira in Satsuma, Takada Kutamigo in Bungo, and Kaifu in Awa. Each za was responsible for meeting the demand in the region, and swords were also sold in Kyoto. For example, sword craftsmen in Nara had their headquarters at Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji, and produced weapons for export and use in Nara.

中世，京都にあった太刀販売の座。戦国期の太刀づくりは，美濃の関を中心として東は駿河の島田，若狭の小浜，加賀の能美，越中の宇津，越後の桃川，西は備中の水田･青江，備後の三原，安芸の入西，筑後の大石･三池，肥後の菊池，薩摩の波平，豊後の高田朽網郷，阿波の海府が知られた。それぞれ地方での需要をまかなうほか，京都に集中されて販売された。例えば奈良の刀細工の座は興福寺，東大寺を本所とし，輸出用や奈良で使用される武器を製造している。
