...This mural is an example of Macedonian Byzantine painting, which, although crude in parts, anticipates the 12th-century Komnenoid works in its dominance of line drawing. One of the masterpieces of Komnenoid painting is the fresco in the church of St. Panteleimon in Nerezi near Skopje, donated by the Byzantine court in 1164. The intense emotional expression of the line drawing here is amplified in the 1191 fresco of the church of St. George in Kurbinovo, where it almost reaches the level of deformation, but where the geometrical designs show extraordinary precision. ...
