An Arabic scholar in Russia and the Soviet Union. He learned Arabic from VR Rosen and Islamic history from VV Bartolid, and published many articles, books, and translations, mainly on Arab literature. His major works include a treatise on the poetry of Ibn al-Mutazz and Abu al-Ala, and an overview of Arab geography and literature, which are collected in a six-volume collection. His memoirs, Among Arabic Manuscripts (1945), have been translated into many languages, and he also had a deep understanding of contemporary Arabic literature. [Yajima Fumio]

ロシア･ソ連邦のアラビア学者。V.R.ローゼンからアラビア語を，V.V.バルトリドからイスラム史を学び，主としてアラブ文学に関する多数の論文，著作，翻訳を公刊した。主要著作にイブン･アルムータッズおよびアブー･アルアラーの詩歌論，アラブ地理･文学概観などがあり，全6巻の全集に収録されている。回想録《アラビア語写本の間で》(1945)は各国語に訳されており，現代アラブ文学にも深い理解をもっていた。【矢島文夫】
