Crashaw - Richard Crashaw

Crashaw - Richard Crashaw

A British metaphysical and religious poet. His works are sometimes said to lack the inner tension and depth of philosophical complexity of J. Donne's metaphysical poetry, but he is a poet who shows the greatest baroque sensibility in British literature. His images are deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, and he sings of Catholic ecstasy by piling up sensory, sensual, and large-gestured images, such as when he describes Mary Magdalene, who weeps over the crucified Christ, as "a blazing fountain, or perhaps a weeping flame," and when he describes her eyes, which are never drained of tears, as "two walking bathtubs, two tears moving, / Two portable, easy-to-use oceans" (from the poem "The Weeping Man").
