Gita Govinda (English spelling)

Gita Govinda (English spelling)
An Indian Sanskrit lyric poem. The Japanese translation of the poem is "Song of the Cowherd." It was written by the poet Jayadeva in the late 12th century. It consists of 12 chapters and has as its theme the sensual love affair between Krishna, a cowherd boy who is an incarnation of the god Vishnu, and Radha, a cowherd woman. The author makes full use of Sanskrit poetic techniques and attempts to create musical effects, but this pastoral love lyric poem is interpreted as hinting at the relationship between gods and humans, and this mystical significance has earned it the acclaim of Vishnu worshippers, making it a precursor to the so-called Vaishnavite literature.
