Hydantoin

2,4-imidazolidinedione. C ₃ H ₄ N ₂ O ₂ (100.08). Also called glycolyl urea. It is obtained by treating glycine or aminoacetonitrile with potassium cyanate. Colorless needles. Melting point 220 °C. K 7.59 × 10 ^-10 (25 °C). Soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in water and ether. When heated with aqueous barium hydroxide, it becomes hydantoic acid H ₂ NCONHCH ₂ COOH. The 3-position is alkylated with alkyl halides, and acylation occurs at the 1-position and 1,3-position. It is condensed with aldehydes at the 5-position, and is widely used in the synthesis of α-amino acids by reduction and hydrolysis. [CAS 461-72-3]

2,4-imidazolidinedione．C₃H₄N₂O₂(100.08)．グリコリル尿素ともいう．グリシンまたはアミノアセトニトリルをシアン酸カリウムと処理すると得られる．無色の針状晶．融点220 ℃．K 7.59×10^－10(25 ℃)．エタノールに可溶，水，エーテルに難溶．水酸化バリウム水溶液と加熱するとヒダントイン酸H₂NCONHCH₂COOHになる．ハロゲン化アルキルで3位がアルキル化され，アシル化は1位および1,3位に起こる．アルデヒドと5位で縮合するので，それを還元後，加水分解して，α-アミノ酸合成に広く利用されている．[CAS 461-72-3]
