[The Creation of Copyright Law]
In a system where the protection of publishers and censorship were two sides of the same coin, the protection of authors was still insufficient. Eventually, a legal trend focused on protecting authors themselves, and in 1709, the world's first copyright law, the Statute of Anne, appeared in England. Now, many countries have modern copyright laws, and a system for protecting the private rights of authors has been established, independent of public law or political factors.
