Founded in 1948, this is a general lifestyle magazine for women. It is published by Kurashi no Techosha. It was launched by the company's founder, Ohashi Shinko, together with Hanamori Yasuji, the first editor-in-chief and founder of the company. With the aim of proposing handmade furniture and straight-cut clothing to make everyday life a little richer and more beautiful, the magazine has maintained an editorial policy that puts itself in the consumer's shoes, conducting product testing and co-developing products with companies. In the 1970s, it had a circulation of nearly one million copies.
The Costume Research Institute, the predecessor of Kurashi no Techosha, was founded in Ginza, Tokyo in 1946. It began as Style Book, a magazine suggesting fashion, and in 1948 launched Utsukushii Kurashi no Techo, which incorporated food and shelter to provide information on all three aspects of life. The name of the magazine was changed to Kurashi no Techo from the 22nd issue in December 1953. In 1956, the magazine received the 4th Kikuchi Kan Award for "efforts to create a new format for a women's home magazine." From the 93rd issue in February 1968, it changed to a bimonthly publication.
The magazine contains product test results, ideas for remaking yukata into dresses or tablecloths, tips on how to bake delicious pancakes, medical and health information, etc. In order to create all the pages of the magazine with their own hands and to ensure the fairness of the products, they do not accept any advertisements from outside and only handle their own books.
Every 100th issue is numbered as "the century". This reflects Hanamori's desire to "return to the basics every 100 issues". From issue 426 released in February 2007, Yataro Matsuura was appointed editor in chief. Since August 2015, Yasuhiko Sawada has been the editor in chief, and has been in charge of issues 480 and onwards.
The NHK morning drama "Toto Neechan," which began airing on April 4, 2016, tells the story of three sisters who overcome the death of their father, grow up, and then found a lifestyle magazine after the war, working as editors for it. Ohashi is the model for the heroine, Kobashi Tsuneko.

1948年に誕生した女性向けの総合生活雑誌。発行は「暮しの手帖社」。同社の創業者である大橋鎭子が、初代編集長で創業者でもある花森安治と共に創刊した。毎日の生活を少しでも豊かで美しくするために、手作り家具や直線裁ちの服などを提案していこうという狙いから、商品テストを行ったり、企業との共同開発商品を手掛けたりするなど、生活者の立場に立った編集方針を続けている。70年代には、100万部近くを発行した。
「暮しの手帖社」の前身である「衣装研究所」は46年に東京銀座で創業した。服飾の提案雑誌「スタイルブック」に始まり、48年には、“食”と“住”をとり入れて衣・食・住そろった「美しい暮しの手帖」を創刊。53年12月の第22号から誌名を「暮しの手帖」に変更した。56年には「婦人家庭雑誌に新しき形式を生み出した努力」という評価により、第4回菊池寛賞を受賞している。68年2月の第93号からは隔月刊に変更した。
雑誌の中では、商品テストの結果や、浴衣をワンピースやテーブルクロスなどに仕立て直すアイデア、ホットケーキをおいしく焼くコツ、医療、健康についての情報などが掲載されている。また、雑誌の全てのページを自分達の手で作成するという意図や、商品の公平性を期すために、広告は外部からのものは一切受けず、自社書籍についてのみを扱う。
発行号数は100号ごとに「第・世紀」と区分される。これは花森の「100号ごとに初心に立ち返る」という思いが込められている。2007年2月発売の426号からは、松浦弥太郎を編集長に迎えた。15年8月より編集長は澤田康彦となり、480号以降を担当している。
16年4月4にスタートしたNHK連続テレビ小説「とと姉ちゃん」は、3姉妹が父の死を乗り越えて成長し、戦後は生活雑誌を創刊、編集者として活躍するドラマで、ヒロイン小橋常子のモデルは大橋である。
