The Perseid meteor shower is one of the three major meteor showers, along with the Quadrantids and Geminids, and appears with its radiant point near the star Gamma Perseus. It always boasts the number of meteors it sees in a year, competing for the number one spot. It usually appears between July 17th and August 24th, with its peak around August 13th. Meteor showers are released from comets, and dust particles with diameters of 1mm to several centimeters that are densely packed in the orbit of the comet enter the Earth's atmosphere, where they become hot due to friction with the atmosphere and emit light. The date and time when the Earth crosses the orbit of the comet is almost fixed every year, so certain meteor showers appear at certain times each year. For this reason, the Perseid meteor shower, which reaches its peak during the Obon holiday period, is said to be a symbol of summer.

しぶんぎ座流星群、ふたご座流星群と並んで三大流星群の一つと呼ばれる、ペルセウス座γ星付近を放射点として出現する流星群。年間でも常に1、2を争う流星数を誇る。一般的な出現時期は7月17日から8月24日で、極大は8月13日頃である。流星群は彗星から放出され、彗の軌道上に密集している直径1mmから数cm程度のチリの粒が地球の大気に飛び込み、大気と摩擦を起こして高温になると同時に発光する現象。地球が彗星の軌道を横切る日時は毎年ほぼ決まっているので、毎年特定の時期に特定の流星群が出現する。そのため、お盆の休暇時期に極大を迎えるペルセウス座流星群は夏の風物詩ともいわれている。
