René Daumal

French poet and writer. Born in the Ardennes. While attending a lycée in Reims, he met Roger Gilbert-Lecomte (1907-43) and R. Baillant, and formed a group of young poets. He eventually moved to Paris, where he founded the journal "The Great Gamble" in 1928, and became a leading figure among the group. He was influenced by Surrealism from an early stage, and continued to have contact with Breton and others, but his natural metaphysical inclinations set him apart.

フランスの詩人，作家。アルデンヌ県生れ。ランスでのリセ(高等中学校)時代にジルベール･ルコントRoger Gilbert‐Lecomte(1907‐43)，R.バイヤンらと知りあい，若い詩人たちのグループを形成。やがてパリに出て，1928年に機関誌《大いなる賭》を創刊し，その同人中の指導的存在となる。早くからシュルレアリスムの影響下にあり，ブルトンらとも交流をつづけたが，生来の形而上学的傾向において一線を画した。
