Also known as "Sfardī." Originally, it referred to Ladino-speaking Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal. When the Jews were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in 1452, many of them migrated to the Ottoman Empire and then to Western Europe. Today, it broadly refers to Jews in Israel other than Ashkenazim, although Middle Eastern and African Jews (Mizrahim) are sometimes included separately.
