A state in the southern United States. Abbreviated as Miss. or MS. The northeastern part is a hilly region that is an extension of the Appalachian Mountains, but most of it is the Mississippi River basin plain, which is extremely flat. The southern part faces the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the Cotton Belt and is one of the leading cotton producers in the United States. It also produces a lot of soybeans, rice, corn, and pecans. It also produces cattle, pigs, and sheep, as well as broilers and eggs. Forestry is also important, and it is blessed with oil and natural gas. About 35% of the residents are black, the highest in the United States (1990). It was colonized by the French in 1699. It was ceded to the British in 1763.
