His mother was Fusako, the daughter of Minister of the Interior, Manrikōji Hidefusa. After his death, he was given the title of Youkoin, and was posthumously awarded the title of Daijō Tennō, also known as Daijō Tennō Youko. In 1568, he was proclaimed prince. In 1584, he was promoted to the rank of Sanbin. As the first son of Emperor Ogimachi, he was selected as the heir to the throne at a young age, and was scheduled to ascend to the throne when his father abdicated in 1581, but he died of illness before this could happen. As a result, the prince's son, Prince Nakahito, ascended to the throne. He became Emperor Goyozei. During this time, in 1592, Oda Nobunaga built the Nijō Imperial Palace for the prince, and he moved there, but in 1597, the Honnoji Incident occurred, and the palace was also affected by the fighting, forcing the prince to flee to the Imperial Palace. He was also included under both the Oda and Toyotomi governments, and attended with his father a tea ceremony held at the Imperial Palace by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the same year. From an early age, he was fond of waka, renga and the koto, and often held poetry gatherings and music gatherings. He also had a strong cultural side, being skilled in tachibana and yōbiki. He is known to have excelled in calligraphy, as evidenced by the surviving anthology of poems, "Fifty Poems of Prince Masahito's Family." His princes numbered 14, including Emperor Goyozei and Prince Hachijo Tomohito. <References> Inoue Muneo, "Research into the History of Medieval Poetry - Late Muromachi Period" (Masaaki Komori) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
