A condition in which macroglobulins are increased in the blood. There are primary and secondary types. Primary macroglobulinemia is also called Waldenström macroglobulinemia after the reporter, and is defined as a neoplastic lymphoid disease that produces immunoglobulin M. It is most common in people in their 60s, and usually begins with weakness and weight loss, and is susceptible to infections, mucosal bleeding, and anemia. Serum viscosity increases, and there is a tendency to bleed and strong bone marrow suppression. There are benign and malignant types, and the average life expectancy is about 3.5 years. Alkylating agents can be expected to prolong life.
