The Pope, the successor of the Apostle Peter and Bishop of Rome, is the supreme pastoral authority within the Roman Catholic Church. According to Catholic doctrine, a comprehensive understanding of three texts (Matthew 16:13-19, Luke 22:31-32, John 21:15-17) proves that Peter received a special mission and authority from Christ among the College of the Apostles. Christ also gave the Apostles the authority to govern and teach (Matthew 18:18, 28:18-20), but in accordance with his command to "preach to all nations until the end of the world" (Matthew 28:19-20), the authority of the Apostles was passed on to his successors, and the episcopal authority and primacy over the entire Church that Peter received were also passed on to the Bishop of Rome.
