A city in south-central Ghana. Capital of the Ashanti Region. Located in the hilly region about 200km northwest of Accra. Capital of the Ashanti Kingdom in the 17th century. It came under British rule at the end of the 19th century, and modern urban development began in 1897. It is still the center of the Ashanti people, and the surrounding area is a major cocoa-producing region. It is a key location for road and rail transport connecting the east and west, north and south, and is one of the leading commercial and industrial centers in West Africa. Cocoa, timber, and food products are exported, and textiles and metal products are imported. A beautiful city known as the Garden City of West Africa, with well-equipped cultural and educational facilities, including a university of education, a university of technology, an agricultural research station, a museum, a zoo, a sports stadium, and a domestic airport.
