Bearhorn - Bearhorn

Japanese:
Bearhorn - Bearhorn

A deciduous tall tree of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae). It grows to a height of about 12 meters, but some can reach over 20 meters. The bark of old trees is dark brown and shallowly fissured. The leaves are narrowly ovate, 6-11 cm long, and have 20-24 pairs of lateral veins. The number of lateral veins is greater than in other hornbeam species. It is monoecious and blooms at the same time as the buds open in May. In autumn, large cylindrical fruit spikes hang down. The bracts of the spikes are densely packed and contain nuts at the base. It is commonly found in mountainous broadleaf forests, and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Iwate Prefecture. The wood is hard and is used for toys, agricultural tool handles, charcoal, and shiitake mushroom logs. It is said to have been named after the carpinus arborescens because it is more magnificent overall than the carpinus arborescens.
