North Izu earthquake

Japanese: 北伊豆地震 - きたいずじしん
North Izu earthquake

An earthquake occurred at around 4:03 on November 26, 1930 (Showa 5) in the northern part of the Izu Peninsula. Its magnitude was 7.3. A swarm of earthquakes occurred off the coast of Ito from February to May of that year (3,915 earthquakes felt in Ito). The North Izu earthquake caused the Tanna Fault to appear, and a 2.7 meter lateral slip was found inside the Tanna Tunnel. Rumbling could be heard in Kinki and northern Kanto, far from Izu, and luminous phenomena were observed in various places from around 5pm on the evening before the earthquake. Damage was concentrated in the northern part of the Izu Peninsula, with approximately 272 deaths and approximately 2,150 houses completely destroyed.
