731‐798 Arab Islamic jurist. A native of Kufa, he studied law under Abu Hanifa and Malik ibn Anas, and is the de facto founder of the Hanafi school. He became a qadi in Baghdad, and was appointed the first Grand Qadi by the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, at the same time serving as his political advisor. His surviving works include The Book of Haraj, The Book of Precedents, and The Book of Disagreements between Abu Hanifa and Ibn Abi Laylah.
