The capital of the province of the same name, located about 200 km southwest of Ankara in mid-west Turkey. Also known as Afyon. Population 96,000 (1990). The city was once the site of a Byzantine fortress. Afyon means opium in Turkish. The province is Turkey's main opium poppy growing region, and the city has prospered through the opium trade since ancient times.
