A device that amplifies the intensity of images created by weak light, X-rays, particle beams, etc. The image to be amplified (images other than visible light are converted to visible light using a fluorescent substance) is created on a photocathode, and the photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode are accelerated and focused on the fluorescent surface using an electron lens. The enhancement index of the image brightness is proportional to the accelerating voltage, and is about 1000 times at 20 kV. Another method is to obtain greater magnification at a low accelerating voltage by directing the photoelectron image to the input surface of a channeltron-type secondary electron multiplier made of a bundle of glass fibers with an inner diameter of several μm.

微弱な光，X線，粒子線などがつくる像の強度を増幅する装置。増幅すべき像 (可視光以外の像はケイ光物質によって可視光に変える) を光電面につくり，光電面から放出される光電子を加速し，電子レンズでケイ光面に結像させる。像の明るさの増位指数は加速電圧に比例し，20kVで 1000倍程度となる。光電子像を内径数 μm のガラス繊維の束でつくったチャンネルトロン型二次電子増倍器の入力面に結ばせ，低い加速電圧でより大きい倍率を得る方法もある。
