This was the nickname of Onoya Sohachi, a representative rental bookstore of the Edo period. It was founded in 1767 (Meiwa 4) and operated in Nagoya for 150 years. It flourished during the Bunka and Bunsei eras, and was frequented by many people, both samurai and commoners. Its wide-ranging collection included entertainment books such as novels and plays, as well as books on religion, I Ching, calendars, astronomy, geography, medicine, and psychoanalysis, and gives insight into the reading trends of the time. Unlike other rental bookstores, which sold their books after passing them around to customers, Onoya accumulated books, and by the time the books were sold off to the Imperial Library, the Tokyo Imperial University Library, the Kyoto Imperial University Library, and other institutions around 1899 (Meiji 32), the number of books had reached over 20,000.
