Alfred Kubin

1877‐1959
Austrian painter. Born in Leitmeritz. Moved to Munich in 1898, where he attracted attention for his bizarre and surreal drawings. He also participated in the New Artists Association and the Blue Rider movement, which included Kandinsky. He later retired to the Zwicklett House in the countryside, and spent the rest of his life as an illustrator for works by Dostoevsky, EA Poe, and others. His works, which depict the dark side of this world, are grotesque, but they also predict the downfall of the old world, and are pierced by the sharp eyes of a voyant.

オーストリアの画家。ライトメリッツに生まれる。1898年ミュンヘンに出，怪奇で超現実的な素描画で注目される。カンディンスキーらの〈新芸術家協会〉や〈青騎士〉の運動にも参加。その後片田舎のツビックレット邸に隠棲し，ドストエフスキー，E.A.ポーなどの作品の挿絵画家として生涯を閉じる。この世の裏面を描く彼の作品は，グロテスクであるが，古い世界の没落を予言しており，鋭い〈見者voyant〉の目に貫かれている。
