1877‐1959 Austrian painter. Born in Leitmeritz. Moved to Munich in 1898, where he attracted attention for his bizarre and surreal drawings. He also participated in the New Artists Association and the Blue Rider movement, which included Kandinsky. He later retired to the Zwicklett House in the countryside, and spent the rest of his life as an illustrator for works by Dostoevsky, EA Poe, and others. His works, which depict the dark side of this world, are grotesque, but they also predict the downfall of the old world, and are pierced by the sharp eyes of a voyant.
