An ethnic minority group found in southwestern China, Myanmar, and Thailand. Their main habitat is in northwestern Yunnan, near the Myanmar border, where the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is located. They are also found in southwestern Yunnan and northern Yunnan, scattered throughout Sichuan, where they coexist with other ethnic groups. Their language is the Lolo-Burman group of the Tibeto-Burman language family. Their population is reported to be about 574,600 in China (1990), about 50,000 in Myanmar, and about 25,000 in Thailand (1988). They generally live in rugged mountainous areas, but the mountains around the Nujiang (Salween) River basin, where they are concentrated, are particularly rugged, reaching altitudes of up to 4,000 meters.
