Also called oilless bearings. A bearing material made by sintering copper-zinc, copper-tin-lead, iron-copper alloys or pure iron powder into a porous material, and then soaking it in lubricating oil by vacuum suction or hot immersion. The oil content is usually 10-35%. The oil that has soaked into the pores is constantly seeping out onto the bearing surface due to capillary action and suction caused by the rotation of the shaft, so the oil supply is stable and there is little seizure. There is also an oil-impregnated cast iron bearing developed by Nippon Oiles Corporation. When cast iron is repeatedly heated, it expands as the flake graphite grows, causing fine cracks all over the surface. This is a drawback of cast iron growing, but it can be used to its advantage by soaking the cracks in oil to create an oil-impregnated bearing. It has the advantage of being able to manufacture large bearings. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
