A general term for mammals belonging to the genus Eptesicus in the family Vespertilionidae of the order Chiroptera. They are so named because of the faint, pale-colored horizontal band on their necks. They are found in Eurasia, Africa, Australia, Alaska, and Argentina, and there are about 35 species, with body lengths ranging from 3.5 to 7.5 cm and forearm lengths ranging from 2.8 to 5.5 cm. There are two species in Japan: the northern brown bat ( E. nilssoni parpus ) in Hokkaido, and the Japanese brown bat ( E. japonensis ) in Honshu.
