Uesugi Narinori
Year of death: May 20, 1889
Year of birth: Bunsei 3.5.10 (1820.6.20)
Lord of Yonezawa (Yamagata Prefecture) during the late Edo period. His father was Uesugi Nariyoshi. His childhood name was Tsuruchiyo, and his pen name was Keizan. He succeeded to his title in 1839 (Tempo 10). In the administration of his domain, he worked to reform the military system, and in 1863 (Bunkyu 3), when he was ordered by the shogunate to guard Kyoto, he demonstrated Western-style drills at the military review. In the same year, he requested a delay in his personal expedition to expel the barbarians, but defended the Choshu domain after the political upheaval of August 18. When the Battle of Toba-Fushimi (1868) broke out, he was ordered to attack the Aizu domain along with the domains of Akita, Morioka, and Sendai, but he gathered with representatives of the various domains at Shiroishi Castle, held discussions, and petitioned the Governor-General of Oshu Pacification for a pardon for his domain. When his request was rejected, he formed the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance. In September 1868, he surrendered early, and his son, Shigenori, participated in the Aizu expedition, so he was given a pardon and ordered to retire in December.
