Spirifer (English spelling)
A representative genus of the order Spirifera in the phylum Brachiopoda, it is widely known throughout the Carboniferous. It is an articulated animal characterized by having spiral arm bones on both sides of the inside of its dorsal shell. The shell is highly variable, but is usually long horizontally with long hinge lines, and many resemble a swallow with its wings spread, hence the Chinese name Shiyan. A fossil animal that lived from the Silurian to Permian periods and peaked in the Devonian period.
