…He was interned during World War I, but returned to England after the war and from 1919 he again worked with Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory. He was mainly involved in research into the nuclear transformation of light elements using natural alpha particles, but in 1930, inspired by the discovery by Walter Bothe (1891-1957) and Herbert Becker of Germany that a more penetrating radiation than gamma rays was produced during nuclear reactions, he began to investigate this new radiation. Through experiments using detection devices such as counters, cloud chambers, and high-voltage electrolysis chambers, he confirmed in 1932 that the new radiation was composed of electrically neutral particles with approximately the same mass as a proton. …
