Cupido - Cupido (English spelling)

He is the son of the Roman goddess Venus and symbolizes lust. The Latin word cupido means "lust" and is the same god as the Greek god of love Eros (Amor, translated from Latin as love). In English, he is called Cupid. He is often depicted as a winged child, but in the Roman epic poem "Aeneid" by Virgil, Cupid was sent to Queen Dido to make her fall in love with the hero Aeneas, and was the hero's son Ascanius. In Apuleius' "The Golden Ass," he appears as a beautiful young man who falls in love with the beautiful Psyche, who was said to surpass Venus in beauty.

ローマ神話の女神ウェヌス（ビーナス）の息子で、愛欲を象徴する。ラテン語のcupidoは「欲情」を意味し、ギリシアの恋の神エロス（ラテン語訳名アモルAmor＝愛）と同一神。英語ではキューピッド。しばしば翼の生えた子供の姿で描かれるが、ローマのウェルギリウスの叙事詩『アエネイス』では、英雄アエネアスへの恋情を芽生えさせるために女王ディドのもとに遣わされたクピドは、英雄の息子アスカニウスの姿であった。またアプレイウスの『黄金のロバ』では、美しい青年の姿で登場し、ウェヌスをしのぐといわれた美女プシケと波瀾(はらん)に満ちた恋に落ちる。
