Korean nationalist leader. His pen name was Kodo. He was born in Banseok-myeon, Gangseo-gun, South Pyeongan-do (Heiannan-do/Pyeonannam-do). He graduated from Meiji University in Japan in 1913 (Taisho 2). He served as principal of Osan Middle School, general affairs officer of the Young Men's Christian Association, central committee member of the Shinkankai, and president of the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, and was called the "Korean Gandhi" for his non-resistance national movement. Immediately after liberation in 1945, he became a central figure in nationalism in North Korea, taking on the posts of South Pyeongan Provincial Chairman of the National Foundation Preparation Committee, Director of the Five Provinces Administrative Bureau, and Chairman of the Democratic Party of North Korea. However, because he opposed the "Trusteeship of Korea Proposal" decided at the Moscow Foreign Ministers' Conference in December of the same year, he was placed under house arrest by the Soviet occupation authorities, and his whereabouts are unknown. He is presumed to have died around 1950. [Momo Tamaki] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
