Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A local powerful clan in southern Kyushu at the end of the Heian period. In 1138, he became the governor of Ata County in Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture). His other name was Zaikuchi. He was the son of Yoshimichi, a descendant of the Hizen Taira clan. His brothers included So Tadanaga, the governor of Satsuma, Ewa, Ijuku, and Chiran Provinces, and So Tadaaki, the governor of Kaseda Beppu Village. In 1150, he became the head of the Satsuma Taira clan, and was called Ata Gonnokami. Minamoto no Tametomo, who expanded his power mainly in Bungo, was his son-in-law. He plotted a rebellion with Tadanaga and seized the entire province of Satsuma, was involved in the local government affairs of Osumi and Hyuga, seized Shimazu Manor, and claimed supremacy over southern Kyushu. However, when Tametomo was defeated in the Hogen Rebellion (1156), Tadakage was also punished by imperial apology and fled to Kikai (Iwo) Island. His descendants succeeded him. The legend of a wealthy man in Ada, which is included in the "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places in the Three Counties," that "in the reign of Lord Takahashi (Takahashi was one of the three districts in Ada County and was the territory of the Ada County Governor), rice was measured in a golden measure," shows Tadakage's wealth. <References> Katsuo Gomi, "Memorandum of the Southern Satsuma-Taira Clan in the Late Heian and Early Kamakura Periods" (Kagoshima University Faculty of Law and Letters Bulletin Literature Department Collection 9) (Yasushi Miki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
