During the Edo period, this was a Shogunate military service imposed on neighboring feudal domains to guard Nagasaki. It generally refers to the guard duties of the Fukuoka and Saga domains, who took turns guarding the Nishidomari and Tomachi guard posts at the entrance to Nagasaki port on an annual basis from 1641 to 1864 (Kan'ei 18 to Genji 1). The Nagasaki Magistrate was mostly a Hatamoto vassal with a stipend of 2,000 to 3,000 koku or less, and did not have the military power, including their vassals, to deal with foreign affairs. Therefore, when a church in the city was destroyed in 1614 (Keicho 19), soldiers were called in from the five Hizen domains, and thereafter the neighboring Omura domain was responsible for guarding the Nanban ships anchored there, detaining Christians and other foreign criminals, and guarding the city during the Shimabara Rebellion.
