Ichikawa Jukai

Kabuki actor. His real name was Ota Teruzo, and his stage name was Narita-ya. He was born as the fourth son of a tailor in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. He became a kabuki actor after studying under Ichikawa Kodanji V. He was adopted by Ichikawa Sumizo V, and after his adoptive father's death, he succeeded Sumizo VI. He played an active role as a handsome actor in Ichikawa Sadanji II's troupe. He briefly participated in the Toho Theater Company. After World War II, he moved to Kansai, and in 1949 (Showa 24), he took the stage name Jukai, which was the haiku name of Danjūrō ​​VII and IX, and became Ichikawa Jukai III. Together with Bandō Jusaburo III, he established the "Sōjū era" and became a leading figure in the Kansai theater world. He was a man of good speech and a dashing appearance, and his forte was in the new Kabuki of Mayama Seika and Okamoto Kidō, but he also excelled in the role of a leading man and a handsome actor in the style of Ichimura Uzaemon XV. In 1984, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and the following year, he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property.

歌舞伎(かぶき)俳優。本名太田照三。屋号成田屋。東京・日本橋の仕立職の四男として生まれる。5世市川小団次(こだんじ)に入門し歌舞伎俳優となる。5世市川寿美蔵(すみぞう)の養子となり、養父の没後6世寿美蔵を継ぐ。2世市川左団次一座の二枚目として活躍。一時東宝劇団に参加。第二次世界大戦後関西に移り、1949年(昭和24)に7世および9世団十郎の俳名であった寿海を芸名とし、3世市川寿海を名のった。3世坂東寿三郎(ばんどうじゅさぶろう)とともに「双寿時代」を築き関西劇壇の重鎮となる。口跡のよさとさっそうとした風姿の持ち主で、本領は真山青果(まやませいか)や岡本綺堂(きどう)の新歌舞伎にあったが、15世市村羽左衛門(うざえもん)系統の捌(さば)き役や二枚目立役にも長じていた。59年に芸術院会員、翌年重要無形文化財保持者に認定された。
