Kupang - Kupang (English spelling)

Kupang - Kupang (English spelling)

A port city in the southwest of Timor Island, eastern Indonesia. The island's central city. Population 52,698 (1971). Founded in 1681 as one of the Dutch spice trading bases. It is an excellent port overlooking Kupang Bay and Semau Island, but the port's functions are affected by the direction of the monsoon. The city is divided in two by a river, with the old and new areas facing each other. Trade in timber, leather, copra, and seafood is thriving, and there is an air route from the capital, Jakarta. Many immigrants come from Roti Island.
