Makie artist. Commonly known as Kyusaburo. Son of a samurai of Nishio Domain, Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). At the age of 11, he became an apprentice to Shibata Zeshin, a famous Edo makie artist, and learned makie and painting while working at his studio for 25 years. He later became independent and established his own school, training many disciples, who were known by the public as the Yagenbori school. His style was influenced by his teacher Zeshin, and he produced similar works to Zeshin, such as makie face paintings and urushi-e paintings, but his fine works are generally small and simple, and while they have a pleasant Edo feel, many of his works are gentle rather than individualistic. In 1896 (Meiji 29), he became an Imperial Household Artist. [Goka loyal retainer] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
