Alibi (English spelling)

Japanese: アリバイ（英語表記）alibi

Absence from the scene of the crime. A person suspected of a crime proves his/her innocence by asserting that he/she was somewhere other than the scene of the crime at the time and date of the crime. The indictment must specifically specify and clearly state the date, time, place, and method of the crime (Criminal Procedure Law, Article 256, Paragraph 3), which not only clarifies the subject of the trial but also has an important bearing on the defendant's submission of an alibi. In British and American criminal courts, there are restrictions on the time period for submitting an alibi, but there are no special restrictions under Japanese law.
